How to use the Data Matrix generator

  1. 1

    Enter the data

Paste a serial number, part number, URL or GS1 element string. Data Matrix accepts any text.

  2. 2

    Adjust scale and padding

Increase the scale for the final print size and keep at least one module of quiet zone around the code.

  3. 3

    Export and mark

Download SVG for laser marking or label software, or PNG for documents.

Features

  • ECC 200 Data Matrix with built-in Reed-Solomon error correction
  • Holds up to 2,335 alphanumeric or 3,116 numeric characters
  • Readable at very small sizes, down to a few millimetres
  • SVG, PNG and PDF export, with custom colors and padding
  • Bulk Studio makes thousands of codes from one spreadsheet

Why industries choose Data Matrix

Data Matrix is a two-dimensional barcode made of square modules inside an L-shaped finder pattern. The solid L tells the scanner where the code is and which way it is oriented, while the dotted opposite edges give the module grid. Because the data is spread with error correction across the whole symbol, a code can still be read when up to about 30 percent of it is damaged.

Its small footprint makes it the standard for direct part marking in aerospace and automotive, for unit-level serialisation of medicines in the EU (the Falsified Medicines Directive) and the US (DSCSA), and for small electronic components. The US Department of Defense requires it on many parts through the UID program.

Tips for marking and printing

  • Keep a quiet zone of at least one module on all sides; two is safer.
  • For GS1 DataMatrix on medicines, the data must start with the FNC1 character and use GS1 application identifiers. Check your packaging line software.
  • Laser-etched codes on metal need high contrast. Test with the scanner used on the line.
  • Smaller module size means a smaller code but needs a better scanner. Aim for 0.25 mm or larger for hand-held devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a phone scan a Data Matrix code?

Some phone camera apps do, but support is inconsistent. Most free barcode scanner apps read Data Matrix reliably. If your audience is consumers with phones, a QR code is the safer choice.

What is ECC 200?

ECC 200 is the current version of Data Matrix, using Reed-Solomon error correction. Older versions (ECC 000-140) are obsolete. Every Data Matrix code made here is ECC 200.

How much data can a Data Matrix hold?

Up to 3,116 digits or 2,335 alphanumeric characters in the largest 144×144 symbol. In practice, keeping the data short gives a smaller code that is easier to read.

Is this suitable for GS1 DataMatrix pharma codes?

It creates standard Data Matrix symbols. Regulated pharma serialisation usually needs the GS1 FNC1 prefix and verified print grades, which should be handled by your validated packaging line system.
